Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel today congratulated Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Bhati for their success in the Rio 2016 Paralympics Games.
“I think it is a big achievement for us and I am very proud of our athletes. Our athletes had done good job in Rio 2016 Paralympics Games. I congratulate Mariyappan Thangavelu who had bagged gold and Varun Bhati bronze in the men’s high jump,” he said.
Indian high jumpers Mariyappan and Varun made the country proud by winning the gold and bronze medal, respectively, in the men’s T-42 category at the Rio 2016 Paralympics early Saturday.
With that, Mariyappan became the third Paralympian from India to win a gold medal, after swimmer Murlikant Petkar’s feat in 1972 at the Munich Games and javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia in 2004, Athens.
